MPACT CASE STUDY

THE CLIENT

The MPACT was developed in collaboration between Alan Hirsch and Rick Newton of the Newton Institute. Alan is a best-selling author and thought leader who developed the 5Q framework, which explores how five latent intelligences function in a team context to sustain and scale organizational mission. Rick is the co-founder of the Newton Institute – a consulting firm that helps individuals and organizations uncover who they are and leverage the power of their unique design.

THE OBJECTIVE

The 5Q framework and corresponding assessment (APEST) was designed for a faith-based context. The Newton Institute built on the 5Q conceptual framework, and helped extend it beyond a faith-based audience to the broader marketplace. My objective was to refine and validate the new MPACT assessment so that it would meet contemporary psychometric standards.

THE PROBLEM

With growing evidence that the 5Q framework was helpful for teams in the broader marketplace, my client needed scientific validation of an initial version of an assessment tool for this context.

THE SOLUTION

I recommended that we simplify the items, refine the main scales through a factor analysis and alpha coefficients, and establish convergent validity through correlations with the MCODE and a short version of the Big-5 personality framework.

In order to accomplish this, we divided the project into several phases. Below is an overview of my work on the MPACT project:

THE RESULTS

The final product was a revised item set for the assessment and a technical report detailing the research methods and results used to validate the instrument. The technical report can be downloaded here.

WHY IT MATTERS

The research provided the scientific validation for the MPACT, which reveals how individuals make a positive impact on the people and organizations they serve, through five quotients: Mentoring, Pioneering, Aligning, Championing, Teaching. The MPACT is now being used by leaders in many organizations to create a culture in which everyone’s contributions are understood, valued, and leveraged for sustained high performance.

Rick Newton Founder/Owner, Newton Institute and Aspirant, LLC

When the Newton Institute needed to validate it’s new, ground-breaking MPACT assessment, we engaged with Dr. Todd Hall.  Todd came highly recommended by another entrepreneur who also collaborated with Todd to successfully validate their assessment.  Todd was both professional and a pleasure to work with.  He was a true “thought partner” that educated us with respect to the process of validation and worked with us to define scope, approach, deliverables, and cost of the validation project.

Our assessment presented some unique challenges, and Todd was able to adapt his methodology to overcome those obstacles.  He was flexible to work within our scheduling constraints, yet helped us to stay on-track and complete the project in a timely basis within budget. Throughout the project, Todd helped us understand the strengths and weaknesses of our assessment – and collaborated with us to strengthen its design.  If you are looking to validate your assessment – especially if you are new to the process of validation, we wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend Dr. Todd Hall.

MOTIVATION CODE (MCODE) CASE STUDY

THE CLIENT

PRUVIO, Inc, is a consulting company that focuses on the science of motivation to develop practical tools that elevate employee engagement. It is a partner company to SIMA (System for Identifying Motivated Abilities), which developed a semi-structured interview and coding system for identifying motivated abilities.

THE OBJECTIVE

My objective was to assist PRUVIO in developing a scientifically valid self-report assessment of core motivations that leverages the constructs drawn from SIMA research.

THE PROBLEM

The SIMA system is highly effective and predictive, but it is also time consuming and expensive. PRUVIO needed a self-report assessment of motivational themes that is scalable and cost-effective.

THE SOLUTION

The initial idea for the structure of the survey was developed by Dr. Peter Larson, and he and Dr. Joshua Miller collaborated with SIMA practitioners to develop the first item set. I conducted the validation research, refined the assessment, and supervised the design and development of the survey and web-based report. Below is an overview of my work on the MCODE project:

THE RESULTS

The final product included a revised item set, the development of a set of research-based domains, a web-based survey, a web-based individual report, and a technical report detailing the research methods and results used to validate the instrument.

WHY IT MATTERS

The research provided the scientific validation for the MCODE and a new, research-based set of motivational domains that group the 27 motivational themes. The MCODE utilizes an individual’s achievement stories and self-reported ratings to identify what drives deep engagement, satisfaction, and fulfillment in life and work. With over 100,000 assessments taken to date, the MCODE is being used by facilitators and teams all over the world to improve collaboration, cohesion, and employee engagement.

Tony Kroening President & Chief Product Officer, Trumotivate

After working with our MCODE team, I asked Todd to assist our team tasked with developing the TRUMOTIVATE -  an assessment designed to measure the core motivations of young adults. Todd was material to the very design of the tool, including the original item content, scales, scientific rigor of the items, and the overall results. He is able to understand essentials from the 50,000 foot vision right down to the working models and core elements that make an assessment both rigorous and insightful.
